Let’s Never Settle

Fukuoka, Japan: A look inside a Hakata love motel

Inside a Japanese love motel in Hakata, Fukuoka: themed rooms, proper privacy and a check-in machine instead of a receptionist. Here's how they actually work.

Love motels are one of those bits of Japan that visitors hear about, giggle at, and then never actually look inside. We were staying in Hakata, the older half of Fukuoka, so we booked one and filmed the room.

They aren't what the name suggests to most visitors: themed rooms, proper privacy, and a check-in handled by a machine instead of a person. The film is a minute inside the room, showing how the whole thing works.

Worth knowing about if you're booking a night in Fukuoka and want something with more character than a business hotel. The rest of that trip is in our Fukuoka story, along with the Kyushu sumo tournament we timed the visit around.

There's more from this trip on our YouTube channel, we film the real sights and sounds, no fluff. You'll also find us on TikTok and Instagram.
