The southern coast of Sri Lanka rewards slow travel, wildlife parks, tea, beaches and markets all within a few hours of each other. Here are two films from our time on the island: a whirlwind tour of the south, and a much slower one about fruit.
Three days across the south
Our route ran from the bustle of Colombo and a visit to Dilmah Tea down to the wild beauty of Yala National Park, where we spotted elephants, monkeys and deer in their natural habitat. We stayed at the Hilton Weerawella, explored Hambantota’s exotic birdlife, relaxed by the ocean at Araliya Resort in Unawatuna, and stopped at a turtle hatchery to see conservation in action. An independent trip, no sponsors, just pure travel joy, squeezed into two minutes of film.
An off-season fruit hunt
Sri Lankan markets deserve a film of their own. Shopping in the off-season means fewer choices but stranger and more wonderful ones: jambola (pomelo), woodapple, soursop, red bananas and the endlessly refreshing king coconut. No commentary, no tasting-to-camera, just the real sights and sounds of buying fruit on the island, exactly as it happens.
